Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that manifests itself as fits or seizures. Abnormal electrical activity in the brain presents as sudden recurrent episodes, loss of consciousness, sensory disturbances or convulsions.  Quite often a public seizure and the actions caused by epilepsy are misunderstood and the behaviour judged as drunk, disorderly, on drugs or a mental health episode.

By raising awareness on seizures and epilepsy the likelihood of these painful misunderstandings can be reduced. Many people don’t realise that one in 26 people will suffer a seizure in their lifetime.  Around 25,000 people are diagnosed each year and currently 250,000 Australians suffer from epilepsy

While it is important to raise public awareness just as important is the need for money to support research and treatment.

The Epilepsy Research Centre is located within the Melbourne Brain Centre – the largest neuroscience facility of its kind in Southern Hemisphere. An all-important Australia wide study is currently being conducted on individuals and families with a history of seizures using cutting edge research methods and technology.

While medical research costs money, treatment facilities also require assistance. The Austin Hospital where Wally Lewis, one of Australia’s most loved sporting legends, underwent brain surgery to treat his own epilepsy, needs funds to extend its clinic operating hours.

On Friday 1 December 2017, the Middle Ridge Golf Club in Toowoomba, will host the Sporting Legends Golf Day. Australia’s 38th Hall of Fame Legend and Rugby League great, Wally Lewis, and former Australian cricketer Greg Ritchie, will be among the keen golfers taking to the greens with a fundraising target of $60,000. The aim is to raise enough funds for the clinic to open for a whole year.

Sponsorship is being sourced for $2000 per hole.  There are many benefits for this price including a team of 4 to play golf, including buggy, a signed Jersey, and a team photo with the King.

When the golf winds up everybody will make their way to the 19th hole, where the charity auction will run from 4pm. A variety of sporting memorabilia, including some genuinely ‘one-of-a-kind’ items, signed Jonathan Thurston state of origin wings. Brian Lara signed cricket bat, Don Bradman signed Team Sheet and assorted signed jerseys.

Many people in the bush may be suffering alone that is why this year we are endeavouring to spread the word in the Rural Regional and Remote areas of Qld.  If you know someone with Epilepsy please pass this information on. It is hoped that this will assist with networks being developed across the region, for support and information sharing.

If you know an organisation or someone who may be interested in sponsoring the event, and playing with Wally Lewis and Greg Ritchie please pass this information on to them.
